I started out many years ago as a volunteer peer group counselor at The Salvation Army in Philadelphia. I found I liked this experience and that led to enrolling in graduate school for Art Therapy at Hahnemann University (now Drexel). Then I began the trip of working for over 20 years in the Substance Use Disorder treatment field.
I have worked in maximum security mental health prison in California, been a treatment manager in a halfway back program for state prisoner, been the coordinator of a program for pregnant women, women with children and men with children in San Francisco. I have worked in inpatient, outpatient and sober living treatment. It's been quite an experience.
And when I can, I like to include Art Therapy, but that is always personal choice of my patients. Some people really like it.
Southern California Art Therapy Association sponsored me to teach their professional members how to use art therapy in the treatment of Substance Use Disorders at The Betty Ford Center in Southern CA. IC&RC granted me the competency level of Subject Matter Expert and I now help write their international advanced exams. In the last two years I have worked with Native American tribes in health centers on their reservations. I am a friend of Bill W.
